Howl’s Moving Castle, by Diana Wynne Jones (1986)
Howl’s Moving Castle is a perfect story for those who love magic. It’s a cute and charming story with love interests, clashing personalities, and a wandering castle that moves across the hills. Plus, a visit to Wales!
After the Witch of the Waste puts a curse on Sophie, she sets off on quite the adventure. We meet Howl, Calcifer, Michael, and even more characters, from family members to fire demons!
Sophie is a fresh and interesting protagonist, after what happens to her, she changes in many ways which offers a unique twist on the where the book is heading.
There is an animated film adaptation released in 2004 that is absolutely brilliant. The movie diverges from the book (the plot and characters) but how the Castle and Calcifer are portrayed is still a beautiful homage to the original.
